HOW IT ALL STARTED
HISTORY OF PILATES
WHAT IS PILATES?
Pilates is a mind-body connection exercise art form. It uses proper alignment and its relationship to the core. It teaches proper breathing, muscle recruitment and a strong focus on set-up and form.
WHERE DID PILATES COME FROM?
Pilates was developed in the 1920’s by German physical therapist, Joseph H. Pilates.
WHO IS JOSEPH H. PILATES?
Joseph H. Pilates created his fitness regime in order to help overcome his own disability of Rickets as a child. He believed that most of us experience imbalances in the body. We tend to focus too much on the big muscle groups which leads to weakness in the small ones. This in turn creates poor posture and spinal misalignment. He came up with a method that targets all the muscles big and small in the body, keeping them strong and balanced.

YOUR INSTRUCTOR
KENDALL
Raised in McAlester, OK, Kendall's passion for dance began at the age of 3 and continued throughout her high school years. Following a dance scholarship at Oklahoma City University, where she received exceptional training for 4 years, she relocated to California.
After spending two decades in the Los Angeles, Ventura, and Ojai regions, she eventually returned to Oklahoma in 2019 to teach Pilates at The Health Zone in Saint Francis Hospital, Tulsa, OK. Her experience working with older individuals in Tulsa equipped her with a diverse skill set for modifying the Pilates method while maintaining its effectiveness and challenge.
Back in 2004, while residing in Ojai, CA, Kendall discovered Pilates and immediately recognized it as the exercise method she had been seeking. After years of being a Pilates student, she was inspired by her instructor, Gail Desart to undergo the BASI "Body Arts & Science International" teacher training course in 2011. Following this, she obtained her BASI Pilates certifications in Mat and all Pilates equipment, maintaining her affiliation with the program ever since.
Over the past two decades, Kendall has been dedicated to the health and fitness industry, serving as a Pilates trainer and dance instructor. Her diverse range of services includes breath awareness, tailored to assist individuals dealing with osteoporosis and those in need of spinal rehabilitation.
In addition to her regular classes, Kendall instructs a diverse range of sessions, including kids Pilates, water aerobics, mat Pilates, and reformer equipment classes. Recognizing the significance of personalized instruction, she established Pilates Houz, a welcoming environment for comprehensive full-body workouts with a focus on breath and form.
In December 2023, Kendall relocated to Santa Fe, NM, where she currently resides with her daughter, Seija, and her cherished canine companion, Poppy the Cockapoo.

WHAT WE USE
EQUIPMENT
PILATES MAT
Pilates Mat classes are a full body workout that create long, lean muscles. Using gravity and your body’s own resistance, Pilates Mat helps to improve your flexibility, posture, strength, and balance.
PILATERS REFORMER
Reformer Pilates combines the traditional principals and movements of mat Pilates with a Reformer machine. This machine contains a foot bar, carriage, pulleys, and five springs of varying tension that can be adjusted to suit your fitness level or needs.
CARDIO REFORMER
The jumpboard employs the principles of plyometrics to train coordination, strengthen muscles and burn calories. It attaches to the end of the reformer and allows you to get cardio aerobic training with very little stress or impact on the joints, and the springs help the muscles tone without bulking.
PILATES TOWER
The Tower is an apparatus that is attached to the Reformer, but offers a more stable surface to work from. Individuals will sit, stand or lie down on a mat and work with resistive springs that are attached to a Tower to build strength, flexibility and muscular endurance.
PILATERS WUNDA CHAIR
Wunda Chair consists of a wooden base topped by a padded seat. Beneath the seat, there’s a pedal that goes up and down, attached to springs on either side offering strong, medium, or low resistance. Wunda chair exercises are performed sitting upright on the padded surface as well as standing atop, behind, or in front of the chair with hands or feet in contact with the pedal.
"The mind, when housed within a healthful body, possesses a glorious sense of power."
- Joseph Pilates

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY...
I joined one of Kendall’s group classes after six years with another instructor. It was immediately apparent that Kendall was going to provide me with a transformative experience. I added duos and private lessons to learn from Kendall and to continue to improve the management of my severe spinal stenosis. Kendall’s instruction provided me with tools necessary to improve my overall health and mobility and to remain pain free.
